چکیده

1. Expt 1. Six 200 kg Hereford heifers fitted with rumen and abomasal cannulas were fed ad lib. on alkali-treated oat straw sprayed with urea and minerals, with no supplement (O), or 700 g rolled barley (B) or cottonseed meal (C)/d, in a 3 x 3 Latin square with two replicates. 2. Intakes of the basal diet were not significantly affected by the supplements. Intakes of digestible organic matter (OM) were 3135, 3325 and 3515 g/d on diets O, B and C respectively. Abomasal OM flow on diet C was 13 and 12% higher than on diets O and B respectively (P less than 0.05) which was associated with a decrease in the proportion of OM intake apparently digested in the rumen (P less than 0.05) and an increase in the proportion of abomasal OM digested in the lower gut (P less than 0.05). 3. Total nitrogen and bacterial N flows at the abomasum were significantly higher (P less than 0.01 and P less than 0.05 respectively) on diet C than on diets O and B. Efficiency of bacterial N synthesis on diet C was 19 and 28% higher than on diets O and B respectively (P less than 0.05). 4. Dry matter (DM) pool size in the rumen was greater on diet C than on diets O and B (P less than 0.05). 5. Expt 2. Thirty-three 210 kg Friesian heifers were allocated to the same treatments as in Expt 1. Intakes of the basal straw diet were not significantly affected by the supplements.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Supplemental protein degradation, bacterial protein synthesis and nitrogen retention in sheep eating sodium hydroxide-treated straw.

1. Alkali (sodium hydroxide)-treated wheat straw was given to six rumen- and abomasal-cannulated sheep to study the rumen degradation of cotton-seed meal (CSM) and barley (B), and the effects of these supplements on nitrogen retention and efficiency of bacterial protein synthesis were measured. 2. N degradation, using porous synthetic (nylon) bags incubated within the rumen (P), and in vivo mea...

Eating Time Modulations of Physiology and Health: Life Lessons from Human and Ruminant Models

Tissue nutrient supply may be synchronized with endogenous physiological rhythms to optimize animal and human health. Glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity have endogenous rhythms that are not essentially dependent on food type and eating. Human glucose tolerance declines as day comes into night. Based on such evolutionary findings, large evening meals must be avoided to reduce risks of vis...

Effects of alkali treatment of wheat straw on intake and microbial protein synthesis in cattle.

Effects of sodium hydroxide treatment on intake and digestion of straw organic matter (OM), and microbial protein synthesis were examined in comparison with untreated and treated straws. Intakes (kg dry matter (DM)/d) of untreated, NaOH- and sodium carbonate-treated straws were 5.21, 7.04 and 6.48 respectively and intakes (kg/d) of digestible organic matter (DOM) for the respective diets were 2...

Rumen degradation and fractional outflow rates of nitrogen supplements given to cattle eating sodium hydroxide-treated straw.

1. Six rumen and abomasal cannulated heifers were used to study the effects of intake on the fractional outflow rates (FOR) of chromium-mordanted cotton-seed meal (Cr-CSM) and meat meal (Cr-MM), CrEDTA, ytterbium and lignin from the rumen. Values of FOR of Cr-CSM and Cr-MM were combined with values of nitrogen disappearance from the protein supplements, placed in porous synthetic (nylon) bags a...

Nutrient supply and growth of cattle offered straw-based diets.

An experiment was conducted using steers cannulated at the rumen, duodenum and ileum to study the effects of increasing the levels of barley and fishmeal in straw-based diets. Diets A, B, C and D contained ammonia-treated straw, barley and fishmeal in the ratios, 67:33:0, 66:23:11, 53:47:0 and 52:36:12 (by weight) and were offered in daily amounts of 3.9, 3.9, 4.8 and 4.8 kg dry matter. The eff...
